chandigarh-759It’s on its way to becoming a ‘smart city’, but right now, it has been anointed the “best value destination” city by a well-known online travel accommodation and advice aggregator.

TripIndex Cities, an annual cost comparison study by TripAdvisor, which describes itself as “the world’s largest travel site”, has found that Chandigarh is the best value destination in India for a city break.

The index compares the cost of a three-night break during the summer travel months of June to August in nine key Indian cities including New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Chandigarh, and takes into account typical costs for two people.

These include a four-star hotel for three nights, lunch each day, a taxi to and from dinner each day, plus the cost of dinner itself. While for the third consecutive year, Mumbai has been ranked the most expensive city among those surveyed, with its three-day weekend getaway amounting to a total INR 39,956, Chandigarh emerged as the most budget-friendly city with a total TripIndex cost of INR 21,849 for the same trip for two.

The overall expense of eating out in Chennai is the highest at INR 16,245 and the least in Chandigarh at INR 7,596. Two trips of two miles each way (6.4 kilometers) in Mumbai will set you back by INR 949, making this six times more expensive than Chandigarh (INR 150). Chennai ranks as the second most expensive city, followed by Kolkata and Bangalore while Delhi has moved from the second position last year to sixth spot this year, making it cheaper than Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Pune.

There is ample reason to celebrate for city folk with Chandigarh being hailed as a preferred destination for tourists globally and a great transit hub. “Personally, I’ve never returned from Chandigarh disappointed. I live in Gurgaon, and it’s expensive while Mumbai is atrocious,” says Nikhil Ganju, country manager, TripAdvisor India.
According to him, there are 49 attractions — tourist spots/things to do alone in Chandigarh — and at rank number one is the Rock Garden. With over thousand flattering reviews on the site, this is a rockstar of a place. “It’s followed by Elante Mall, Sukhna Lake, the gardens and parks, hiking trails, Chandigarh Fitness trail, Doll Museum, Corbusier Centre, Pedal Chandigarh, Timber Trail, Government Museum, Iskon, and at number 12 is High Court,” adds Ganju.

The reason why Chandigarh is tops is because it’s “easy on pocket, an organised city, has proximity to the hills, and safe for travellers, especially foreigners,” says Ganju. TripIndex is an indicator of how the cities are evolving as travel destinations and more importantly helps travellers to see where they get the best value for money. The cities in the TripIndex are either destination or a transit hub to many other locations. So while one can pursue their passion for travel, one can also draw an estimate and help plan and book a better holiday.
“From four star accommodation, meals with wine, to stay, cost of getting around, all these elements work in favour of Chandigarh as it provides the perfect combination for business, leisure, travel,” says Ganju.
